I am a sucker for memories….a SUCKER! I love nostalgia and reliving good times through photos…Lord knows I take enough photos we could wallpaper the house with them. I got to thinking….there’s got to be a reason why I love photos and reminiscing so much, so I did some research.
Did you know that Neuroscientists have discovered that when you recall an old memory, a representation of the entire event is instantaneously reactivated in your brain?! This representation often includes the people, location, smells, music, and other trivia associated with the event. According to Psychologytoday.com, recalling old memories can have a cinematic quality. Memories often seem to play out in the mind’s eye like an old Super 8 home movie or vintage Technicolor film. New research reveals that humans remember life events using individual threads, that are coupled together into a tapestry of associations. Dr. Aidan Horner explains, “When we recall a previous life event, we have the ability to re-immerse ourselves in the experience. We remember the room we were in, the music that was playing, the person we were talking to and what they were saying. When we first experience the event, all these distinct aspects are represented in different regions of the brain, yet we are still able to remember them all later on. It is the hippocampus that is critical to this process, associating all these different aspects so that the entire event can be retrieved.”
Isn’t the brain amazing? Makes so much sense why we love to remember and why putting up these mementos in our home is comforting. So I decided to spruce up our Space for spring with Snapfish. With even a small budget I created personal items for the kitchen, living room and the boys’ bedroom. First off Snapfish makes it super easy to create projects on their website…I spent hours creating gift ideas for future holidays and making personal items for our home because honestly it was just so much fun. I was so happy to find that the quality of the images on the actual product is really good and crisp. They will even let you know if the resolution of an image is too low so that you end up with the best possible photo product. I created these personalized pillow cases with photos that represented pure moments of joy for my boys. Waylon loves creating things with LEGO’s so this is the most fitting place to lay his head at night and made him feel even more proud of his work.
I created a pillowcase for Zeke as well with a memory I’m quite fond of… watching him float in the warm waters of Hawaii with the biggest grin on his face.
For myself and a momento for the kitchen I created a personalized mug of memories that make my coffee taste even better!
And for the living room or any room really I printed out some 11 x 14 inch prints that can be framed or taped up with washi tape…shortly after snapping this image Waylon decided these should go on his door so now they live there and remind of all of good times.
