Cue the long days outside, tan skin, and making s’mores over the fireplace because it is officially summer! As I write this I only have about 3 weeks until our due date with baby girl, and we are mostly prepared for one more baby…almost. I go by the theory that you’re never really prepared for what a new baby brings, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t amazing. Who knows…maybe by the time I publish this, she might just be here!!!!
I checked off the #1 thing on my “getting prepared for baby” list, and that was to actually purchase a car that can fit our whole family. We’re now proud owners of a minivan, and to make a purchase like that, we needed to know and understand our credit score as a first step in that process.
I bet you didn’t know, but American Express now has a free credit score tool called American Express® MyCredit Guide that’s available to both Card Members and non-Card Members alike! We’ve used this tool when deciding how to purchase our new car, as well as other financial decisions we have to make in the planning process for our next home build. Knowing your credit score is huge when making financial decisions.
This tool offers such helpful resources from VantageScore® credit scores by TransUnion® to a credit score simulator to TransUnion® credit reports. I totally encourage you to visit MyCredit Guide to learn more about your own score. And like I said before, this tool is available even if you don’t have an American Express Card, doesn’t hurt your credit, and is totally free.
Key benefits to using MyCredit Guide:
- Detailed credit reports to better understand your score
- Access to a credit score simulator
- Confidence that you will be able to quickly identify identity fraud because email alerts are sent when there are major changes to your credit report
Talk about peace of mind!

I’m so ready for summer and all the fun it brings. If you’ve been following us for a while you know that in
July we’ll be adding a new family member…our BABY GIRL!
So, our annual July summer trip to Santa Cruz has been placed on hold until, oh you know, I give birth
and we find our bearings as a family of 5. Our summer plans include: finalizing house plans to submit to
the city for permits, organizing our small home to make room for a baby and lastly a family BBQ, since
my sister and her family are moving back to San Diego woohoo!
Here’s a few family updates:
Everyone in our family pitched in for Sam’s 40th birthday and bought him a gift card to Shaper Studios to
shape his own surfboard…but he’s on a bit of time crunch and has to make it in the next month and half
before baby comes haha!
It worked out great, and I paid for it with my Amex EveryDay Credit Card so I could earn some major
Membership Rewards points. I plan on using all these hard-earned points for baby and family stuff. Once
you make 20 or more purchases on the Card in a billing period, you’ll earn 20% extra points on those
purchases*…so points can add up even faster! For instance, instead of 2x points on purchases at US
supermarkets*, you could get 2.4x (on up to $6,000 in purchases per year) – not a bad deal!
Since you can redeem Membership Rewards points at places like REI, I might actually be using some for
new camping gear. I have it on my bucket list to camp at El Captain in Santa Barbara…but, here are some
other great ways you can use your Membership Rewards points:
• Use Pay with Points at select merchants*
• Redeem for retail, restaurants, entertainment or American Express gift cards*
• Apply points to eligible charges on your statement*
• Use points for some or all of your travel at amextravel.com*
• Transfer points to a participating loyalty program*
If only we could cash in these points for our new house haha! We’re still in the planning process, but
we’re moving into the soil engineering phase so that’s progress…slow progress but progress
Waylon and Zeke will be doing swim class this summer since I’m adamant they become proficient
swimmers before I have a baby strapped to me all the time…Waylon is doing great at this; however,
Zeke is still against floating haha.
I’m getting our room ready for the baby since she’ll be in our room for the first year…I just sleep better
that way. I’m looking for bassinets and found a beautiful one from Pottery Barn and just discovered that
I can use my Membership Rewards points to purchase it!
I also have a crazy fun idea of making an outdoor movie viewing area for the nights we have family and
friends over. I haven’t figured it all out yet, but I think all you need is a projector, a white sheet and
some comfy pillows. I’ll let you know how this goes for sure!
Oh, and lastly we are looking at minivans since we can’t fit 3 car seats in our current vehicle…I’m actually
really excited to have a van with a lot more space. Road trips will be that much more bearable!
